Description
I bought this car from Craig Chima, he bought it himself from the fellow who wrote this description and this is the original advertisement. I haven't raced the Elan nor run it on any track, it has been merely driven in and out of my air conditioned storage area on two or three ocassions. I bought this car when advertising for parts to restore and race prep my 65 Bahama Speed Weeks Elan, thinking that this would be an easy way to go racing with CSRG. Unfortunately I would have to change the dry sump set-up, carbs, brake bias adjuster and so many of the other features that I feel are an essential part of the cars make up. I have removed all of the stickers from the ouside body of the car.
This Lotus Elan has been a race car since 1988 when it was built for vintage racing by Harry Mathews from a street car owned by automotive artist Michael Mate. It was prepared to the 1967 SCCA GCR with specific Rocky Mountain Vintage Racing allowed exceptions, a dry sump system and CV joints instead of doughnuts. It is on its fourth Logbook and has raced at tracks from Kent Washington and Laguna Seca, CA to Watkins Glen New York and VIR. It has always been reliable and successful. Driven by Greg Mathews it was a frequent overall winner in RMVR, when driven by me it has been a consistent top five finisher and 1st or 2nd in class with regularity. In 2000, the car was given a ground up restoration by 3R Automotive a well known race prep shop and Pebble Beach restoration shop. The car has had about 25 events since that rebuild. In 2003 the engine was completely redone by Dave Vegher of Veloce West with only the block and crank used from the past. Everything else was new. The engine was built for torque and reliability and has had only 13 races on it since it was built. In 2005, Clive Chapman, son of Colin Chapman and proprietor of Classic Team Lotus drove the car, pronounced it wonderful and signed the dashboard. This is a great, fun, reliable car that has given me much enjoyment over the 11 years I have raced it. Now I'm hanging it up and saying goodbye to an old friend. I an looking for a good home - someone who will appreciate it and have as much fun as I have had.
