Founded by Herbert Austin in 1905, the Austin Motor Company’s first real hit wasn’t until the introduction of the Austin 7 in 1922, one year following a corporate restructuring. The success of the Model 7 was such that eventually licensed versions were being produced by BMW, Datsun, and Rosengart in France.
In the United States, American Austin Car Company (later to become American Bantam) was formed in 1929 specifically to distribute the hugely popular Austin 7. Like so many American auto makers at the time, economic instabilities in the U.S. around the time of the depression led to frequent restructuring. The year prior to the company’s reorganization as American Bantam, in their Butler Pennsylvania workshops in 1937, American Austin Car Company produced among its very last and most rare automobiles—a mere six Austin Boat Tail Speedster convertible prototypes.
Of the original six prototypes assembled at that time, this exceptionally special and rare example alone is known still to exist. With more than 2,000 hours invested in this painstaking restoration, and 1st place honors from the AACA in Hershey Pennsylvania in 2006, this automobile is absolutely one of a kind, and is without question among the most desirable and valuable collector cars to be available at any time.
