I've reduced the price to move this truck.  My new home needs kitchen cabinets more than I need this truck.  PLEASE NOTE - The installed new correct 6TL batteries pictured ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS REDUCED PRICE; at this price you'll need to bring your own batteries.

Up for auction is a former District of Columbia Army National Guard M818 with naturally aspirated Cummins diesel motor that is also equipped with the desirable hardtop and 20,000 lb. winch.  Please click here to view many additional pictures of this truck; the last link in this series is a video so you can hear the motor purrrrr.  I personally topped off all fluids, greased all grease fittings, and replaced the fuel filter.  The entire electrical system, headlights, tail lights, directional lights, all gauges, and horn work as designed.  The battery charging system works properly, the motor runs at its correct operating temperature, the motor oil pressure is great and the compressed air system builds and holds air pressure as designed.  I installed brand new wiper blades and both wiper motors work great.  All 11 each 1100x20 NDCC Titan T-Hawk 373 tires are very new and weather-check free; the spare is brand new, the eight rears are nearly new, and the fronts have approximately 40% tread remaining.  All glass is in tact and unbroken, the door windows go up and down fine, and the doors are in good adjustment and open and close just fine, but could use internal lubrication.

The government clearly put lots of money in this truck before it was sold as the motor appears to have extremely low hours since it was rebuilt (the paint isn’t even burnt off of the brackets that hold the exhaust manifold to the motor heads).  The muffler, J-pipe, and stack are like new (most of the rust-free clean metal is still showing on the expensive J-pipe).  All belts are brand new.   The installed four new correct 6TL batteries pictured ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS REDUCED PRICE.  The new style Holland fifth wheel is like new.  The clutch feels very good and works fine.  The brakes work completely as designed and feel very responsive (like, they’ll put you through the windshield responsive).  All sheet metal is straight with only a few small rust spots.

You can see the gauges, but I won’t even speculate hours and miles as (a) you don’t really know if the gauges are accurate and (b) the gauges seldom accurately depict the true hours and miles on all driveline components.  I am not sure as to the year of this truck.

Although this truck is in excellent shape it is in need of some repairs.  The driveline has some leaks, but all are related to readily available and fairly-simple-to-replace seals and gaskets; most is seepage and NONE (one exception is the power steering pump noted below) leave puddles on the ground (in fact I’m not sure if it’s currently leaving spots on the ground).  The power steering works perfect, but when you top off the power steering pump the power steering fluid leaks badly out of the pump down to a certain level, and then stops leaking (I suspect it’s a bad seal in the power steering fluid pump).  I will install a brand new power steering pump for the buyer for $350.00 plus I keep the old power steering pump.  The motor cranks fine, but slow; I believe that either a ground connection, a cable, or the starter is bad.  The winch driveshaft is missing.

Last, but most important to drivability, the front tires are wearing extremely rapidly and this truck should not be driven (other than on to a low boy or step deck trailer) until this problem is addressed.  I believe that this problem is related to the transfer case mechanical linkage or the air shift actuator for the sprag.  When the high/low range selector lever is lifted all of the way up the transfer case is in high range, but when the high/low range selector lever is pushed all of the way down the transfer case is not engaged at all.  This leads me to believe that the transfer case mechanical linkage is out of adjustment.  The other possibility is that the sprag isn’t working as designed due to a faulty air actuator cylinder; click here to read up on this problem.  When I started driving this truck the front tires were nearly new; 20 miles later they were down to 40%.  I say this simply so the buyer knows that I personally drove this truck at city and highway speeds and other than the sprag or transfer case issue, it drives great.  (All that said, I did not feel the binding, drive-line wind-up, banging or the occasional lurching that I’ve read about online.)  I will sell a government rebuilt transfer case in the government shipping container to the buyer for $1,500.00.  That said, I am 93% confident that the transfer case is fine and that the problem is mechanical linkage adjustment or sprag issues.

If the buy it now is used I will fill both fuel tanks with diesel fuel.  If the truck sells for less than the buy it now price I’ll ensure that there is at least 5 gallons of diesel fuel in each fuel tank so that the buyer has enough fuel to get the truck loaded on to the shipper’s low-boy or step-deck trailer.  I do have access to very competitive shipping rates considering today’s diesel fuel prices.

Feel free to make offers for the truck, such as without the hardtop or with junky, but air-holding 1100x20 tires or whatever, however, no trades as restoring my retirement home and I could use the cash.  This is going to be a great truck for someone who has the time and mechanical ability to work through the small issues.

I have applied for the SF97 and I will provide it to the buyer if and when I receive it from the government and only after the truck is paid for in full.  I will also provide a bill of sale.  As always, all government rules apply and this truck will only be sold to US Citizens and the truck must stay in the USA.  Cash, check, wire transfer, it really doesn’t matter to me so long as the buyer knows that this truck, or anything else I sell, isn’t leaving my possession until it’s paid for in full.
