Vehicle Description

This is an exceptionally nice LC4 ready to take you on your next dualsport adventure ride. The only thing this bike needs is a rider. So, if you missed out on the other LC4 that I recently sold, here is your second chance to get one of my bikes.

If you use the eBay “Buy-it Now” button, or if auction price exceeds the “Buy-it Now” price, I will include in the Supermoto Kit detailed below in the purchase price.

I do not intend to sell either the bike or Supermoto kit outside of eBay before the scheduled end of the eBay auction.

“Adventure-lite” Set-up Details
I purchased this bike from the original owner in 2001 with just 360 miles on the odometer. As of 5-July-2008, The bike has 12,700 miles, of which the majority has been pavement commute miles even though the bike is currently set-up in Dualsport “Adventure-lite” trim.

The current “Adventure-Lite” configuration includes 21” and 18” wheels, both with DOT knobbies in excellent condition, much heavier fork and shock springs and a true nose-bleed seat height (i.e., stock ride height plus comfort seat). Unless you have a 36” inseam, do not plan on being able to put both feet down flat at the same time (unless you use the Supermoto suspension and lower the ride height as described below).

The forks and shock were rebuilt, resprung and revalved by Super Plush Suspension (Jonah Street’s rally bike suspension guy, www.superplushsuspension.com ) with the help of the adventure bike specialists at Scuderia West ( www.scuderiawest.com ) . The Adventure “Lite” springs are for serious off-pavement riding with a 175 pound “B” rider and fully loaded soft luggage and extra fuel. Alternately, you could carry a passenger with some limited amount of luggage.

You will NOT likely want to run these SPS springs without luggage or a passenger unless you significantly back-off the shock spring pre-load. If you always ride without luggage or passenger, then a better solution would be to use the correct spring that is readily available from your favorite suspension shop or KTM.

The gas tank is KTM’s standard 4.6 gallons (18litre) unit; however, thanks to the SPS suspension, additional gas can be carried in the optional tail bag. This combination provides a useable range of well over 200 miles of spirited Adventure-style riding

The stock Supertrapp exhaust keeps noise down and has a spark arrestor, both of which will keep the local residents and LEOs happy. The Mikuni BST-40 is properly set-up to provide an appropriate balance between performance and fuel efficiency. In fact, this is one of the best running LC4s that you will find. I would be pleased if you ride some other LC4s first with either a Mikuni or FCR carburetor, with or without an aftermarket exhaust. Then and only then will you fully appreciate just how perfectly this bike runs. It certainly runs better than my bone stock and nearly brand new 2007 KTM 640 Adventure (which I haven’t yet tuned).

BTW, I used to have a Keihen 41 FCR with FMF exhaust on this bike. It was certainly louder and had more of a mid-range “hit”, but the overall performance difference from the Mikuni and Stock exhaust was negligible and I have the dyno charts to prove it. With the FCR/FMF peak power was 47Hp vs. 46 Hp for the Mikuni/Supertrapp. Plus, at less than ¼ throttle opening (i.e., technical off-road) throttle control was jerky with the FCR…just too much carburetor for the tight stuff.

Supermoto Set-up Details
The Supermoto Kit contains everything you need to convert this bike from Dualsport into the ultimate commuter and back road twisty burner. You simply switch out to the KTM 17” Behr wheels, install the MxTech supermoto fork and shock springs and bolt on the complete 320mm front brake system. Set the sags and you will be ready to scorch some tarmac.

The Supermoto suspension was originally set-up for me by MxTech, the same suspension shop that handles all of KTM’s factory team race supermoto suspensions here in the USA. Notice also that this kit includes a complete front brake system, including matching Brembo16mm diameter master cylinder and 4-piston Brembo Gold caliper to the 320mm front disk. All of this provides some serious stopping power on the pavement.

Ride Height Adjustments
If the existing 36” inseam nose bleed seat height is of concern to you, the bike can be lowered a number of ways depending upon your mission statement for it. The easiest way would be to simply use the stock seat instead of the so-called comfort seat. The extra padding on the comfort seat seems to add about ¾” in overall seat height.

Ride height could be further reduced as follows:

1. Lower the front by either sliding the fork tubes up in the triple clamps and/or by installing fork ride height spacers (~$50) from either MxTech or your favorite suspension shop; AND

2. Lower the rear by either purchasing and installing ride height lowering shock linkage “dog bones” (i.e., see Emig Racing) OR by having your local suspension shop install the MxTech shock spacer supplied in the Supermoto Kit.

Whether or not you should use the various springs supplied with either the bike or Supermoto kit, or get new ones, will be a function of whether you intend to ride with luggage and/or passenger as discussed above.

Service History:
With the exception of a couple of visits to Scuderia West for some dyno carb tuning and to get the CDI and sensor replaced and the suspension work by SPS and MxTech, I have performed the maintenance on this bike.

This bike has never been raced or experienced any high speed get-offs, although it has been dropped a few times while off-roading. As a consequence, the tank decal on both sides leaves a little bit to be desired. Oh well, since KTM isn’t sponsoring me, I refuse to pay to put their advertising stickers on my bike.

Oil and filter changes have been nominally every 2,000 miles using full-synthetic Motul either 10w-40 or 15w-50 depending upon time of year.

All pre-2003 LC4 motors originally used a ball bearing on the transmission mainshaft. In 2003, KTM began using a much stronger, more reliable roller bearing. When I installed a new clutch and clutch bearing at 11,000 miles, I also upgraded the mainshaft bearing with the roller bearing.

Valves were adjusted nominally every 5,000 miles.

All suspension linkage bearings have been recently serviced and a grease fitting has kept the steering head bearings happy.

Some people claim to get 40+ MPG, but the best I have ever seen is 38 MPG.

Inspections
While the posted pictures really do provide a complete description, the bike can be inspected in person by appointment in Sunnyvale, CA during working hours Monday through Friday. No test rides without me first having cash in hand. If the bike comes back in one piece after a test ride and if it isn’t everything I say it is to your complete satisfaction, then I will hand back the cash.

Delivery
All prices are FOB, Sunnyvale, CA.

Payment
I will require either payment in full or a non-refundable deposit of $500 via PayPal or cash within 24-hours. Acceptable forms of payment for any remaining balance are limited to cash, PayPal or verified bank check. If final payment is to be via bank check, buyer is to fax a copy of the check to me at least two working days in advance of pick-up or shipping. I will have my bank contact the issuing financial institution to verify authencity and availability of funds.

Just so this point doesn't go unnoticed, the Supermoto Kit doesn't include either a side or center stand. The center stand currently on the bike is the stock dualsport KTM item. It will work with the Supermoto wheels, but looks a little goofy when the bike is way up in the air when parked. If you use the Supermoto wheels, and certainly if you lower the suspension, you will likely want to cut-down the center stand to match the new ride height. This is just a point of clarification and doesn't change the original description.

As noted below in my response to a Member question, I will include the Supermoto Kit in the transaction if the auction price is $4,452 or greater per the original "Buy-it Now" price offer.

BTW, the new replacement cost of everything included in the Supermoto Kit would exceed $2,200 plus tax and/or shipping.

Special thanks to everyone who came by to inspect the bike! I think I spoke with most of you, but if I missed you, I trust you agree that this bike is everything I say it is. If nothing else, this whole experience proves once again that people from all walks of life can share a common interest in motorcycles. Thanks for looking and happy bidding!
