North American P51 Mustang A little history... - The P-51D has become an icon of American airpower in WWII despite the fact that it only participated in the last year of the war in Europe. While renowned for its beautiful lines, it's equally famous for its excellent performance and long range. It truly excelled as a long-range escort, able to fly great distances and take the fight to the enemy.
- Operated by the RAF as well as the USAAF, the Mustang proved to be the best escort fighter available because of its comparatively economical engine and generous internal fuel capacity which enabled it to accompany American bombers all the way to Berlin and back.
- The P51 owes its rightful place as one of the best fighters in WWII to some innovative design and a small piece of luck. The design was in the low drag airframe and laminar flow wings, which allowed for some truly staggering at the time top end speed, and the luck was a British decision early on it's history to attempt to mount a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine in place of the original Allison supplied in Mustangs.

What is a Blueprint... Formed by light-sensitive iron salts, the blueprint process is characterized by white lines on a distinctive blue background that can range from deep to moderate in intensity. It relies on two classes of compounds. The paper is light-sensitized with a mixture of a diazonium salt (used in the manufacture of dyes), a reactant and an acid that keeps the diazonium salt and the reactant from reacting with each other. A designer or draftsman first makes an original drawing on tracing paper or clear, colorless plastic. This tracing is placed over chemically modified blueprinting paper and exposed to ultraviolet light. Light destroys the diazonium salt. Ammonia gas or solution is used as a developer after exposure -- it neutralizes the acid and allows the remaining diazonium salt to combine with the reactant to create a blue dye. The nearly completed Blueprint is then heated to stabilize the compounds and remove any residual chemicals. The result is a blue sheet of paper with white lines, called a blueprint. Aside from alkaline and extended exposure to direct sunlight, blueprints are as stable as the paper on which they are printed. - Blueprinted images are permanent.
