This is an all original 1974 850 Norton Commando
A bike like this with this color and documented miles is hard to find and a real nice machine to boot. This would be a nice show bike or a great bike to use everyday if one was so inclined.
I am the second owner, the original owner is a good friend of mine, he bought this bike new, put some miles on it then had medical trouble, he put it up thinking someday he would restore it. After sitting in different barns and his sheds through the years [28], he sold it to me. I had a Norton when he bought this one and know the exact history of this bike, and know Nortons.
I have restored bikes and cars for almost 40 years, and I like building them more than having them. I got this one thinking I would keep it, but I have already found something else I want to build so it is for sale.
This bike is the original color, which was real metalflake orange, gold apricot. We had the sidecovers to match the paint. It has been repainted with basecoat clearcoat. The underside of the tank and inside of the covers looks as good and correct as the outside.
The tank, sidecovers, switches, levers, headlight bulb, hubs and disc, are the original ones that came with the bike.
The engine, trans are original and are numbers matching.
These are new:
English made wheels, original style, 19"
Dunlop tires and tubes as original
Buchanan stainless spokes
All wheel bearings, double sealed
Fork neck bearings
Brake pads and shoes, rebuilt master cyl and caliper
Headlight bucket and ring
Fork tubes and all seals and dust cover
Battery and electronic ignition [no points]
Norton fuel line and air cleaner
New style isolastic vernier engine mounts
Rear Shocks
Rear taillight and all turn signals
Brakelight switches
Seat
Kickstand and spring
Exhaust and all exhaust mounting
These were Powdercoated
Frame, Engine cradle, Front and Rear hubs, Triple tree, Gauge mounts, and Swingarm.
Engine and transmission:
The engine was gone completely through with 20 over pistons, new valves, cylinder and head decked to check for flatness, new fasteners, sidecover bolts changed to allen head. Transmission and clutch are original and work perfect.
The engine is barely broken in and it runs as strong as one thinks it should and is a lot of fun to listen to as you crack the throttle and feel the power all the way through the power band.
All parts used were Norton except for the Headlight bucket, rear wheels, seat, and rear signals, and exhaust, these were generally english aftermarket.
I have tried to list everything I can think of and I know I have forgotten some. Basically this is a new bike that lacks for nothing and is in better then original condition.
But it is still being sold as is with no warranty
I can deliver within a reasonable distance and this would be at $2.50 a mile.
