are bidding on a 1996 Ford Winstar LX. I have owned this van for
about 4 years. It is comfortable for 7 people on long trips. It
has gray cloth seats in excellent condion, power front seats w/
adjustable lumbar support , two built-in child seats which fold in when
not in use, nice sound system w/ front and rear controls, automatic
rear mirror dimmer, automatic headlight delay shutoff, alloy wheels,
cold AC, digital dashboard, trip computer, keyless entry, keychain
transmitter, roof rack, traction control, nice looking, roomy, and
comfortablel. Here are some known/ possible problems: rear
air supension leaks down overnight, passenger window won't go down
(this just happened and may be a simple fix), one of the rear power
windows needs a new plastic arm or needs to be disabled,
occasionally has a rough idle that goes away, two cup holder clamps are
broken, cruise quit working (hasn't been checked out) Brakes: ABS
pushed back too aggressively at times in past, increasing stopping
distance on slick surfaces. It was checked out by more than one
mechanic a long time ago and no problem was found. This didn't
give us a warm fuzzy feeling. The ABS has since quit working and
brakes operate like an older vehicle, which may be a good thing.
The front, right brake might be rubbing. The brake system
needs to be checked out. Engine: mechanic told me a year or two ago
that he saw water in the oil during an oil change; hasn't mentioned it
since; runs strong and seems fine. I've heard this may not cause
problems if you perform regular oil changes. Body: generally good
shape; looks nice; has two minor dings; some paint on roof has peeled
(difficult to see). Hitch: to my knowledge, this van was never used
for towing until last summer when I had a hitch installed for a very
light 4' x 8' trailer; the total distance traveled was less than 100
miles, and it had absolutely no problem with it.
Below is a Kelley Blue Book appraisal. A lot of people use this
resource, but I think they run too high. You may also check Edmunds.com.
